Pest Plant removal at Rosmini College
Rosmini Envirogroup set out with trepidation on a rainy, freezing Friday morning to rid Rosmini College of pest plant species. Moth plant, Pampas grass and invasive lilies kill native species and make it difficult for them to flourish. Maisie from Pupuke Bird Song arrived with a van full of equipment and helped us with her experience and expertise.
As luck was on our side the clouds parted and during a beautiful, if chilly morning, the boys set to work destroying all the huge sharp Pampas mounds they could find. Maisie also searched for other invasive species which were removed with specialist equipment.
A huge amount of progress was made and Maisie taught us how to dispose of seed pods and heads responsibly. Again luck was on our side as the heavens opened as we broke for lunch. After lunch the group was visibly tired, but managed to clear up the plants they had removed and collect all the equipment. Time for a last victorious photo before the last downpour of the day. The progress made this day has given us hope to completely eradicate invasive species from Rosmini in the next few years.
